A religious Festival- Akwasidae is based on the Ashanti Calendar, which has forty - two days in each month, That is why we have nine months in a 2001 as shown above.

The Ashantis' with a very rich culture in Ghana believed in an ancestral worship and so once a month (every 42 days) they like to come into contact with their ancestors. The festival starts on Friday, called Adaefofie. And it is not opened to the public.

The next day, Saturday, which is also not opened to the public, is called Memenada Dapaa. The climax, which is Sunday, is open to the public and is called AKWASIDAE. The celebration on these days involves purification of the black ancestral stools in the stool's room at the King's Palace where only a few people are allowed to observe.

These stools are hand carved "chairs" for past kings. At the King's death, his stool is blackened and kept in the stool's room.

The Sunday climax is a dubar of Chiefs and people of Ashanti where the famous Ashantihene presides.

This offers a platform for the various chiefs to THE GOLDEN STOOL. The Golden Stool is the symbol of the Ashanti unity and it is believed that the golden stool contains the spirit of all Ashantis both dead and living. This is an occasion to pay homage to the Ashantihene. Tourists are allowed to pay homage if they wish and they are allowed to shake hands with the Ashantihene (the King) and photographs or video may be taken.
