The famous Elmina Castle, the first European edifice in Africa south of the Sahara was built by the Portuguese in 1482. This castle was later used as the main auction market and garrison for the slave trade. Of special interest are the slave dungeons, the auction market and the Portuguese church. At the Cape Coast Castle where the Dutch lodged in 1637, one may see many slave dungeons and the "gate of no return" which now harbours the West Africa Historical Museum. Both Cape Coast and Elmina castles have been designated by UNESCO as world heritage Monuments.

The Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana, where Kumasi, the second largest city of Ghana, was occupied since the 16th century, and also was geographical meeting point of two powerful trading systems. Also the Ashanti craft villages. The paraphernalia for the tradition of the chieftancy is created in the villages outside Kumasi. See the Kente Village, the Wood carving Village, the Adinkra Cloth Village etc.

In the Gambia, you will see the unforgettable memories such as the homecoming Juffureh, the village of Alex Harley and James Islands, one of the points of departure of the slaves to the Americas.
